Esperia and Bridge

On March 29 and 30, 1922, Geneva and friends sailed to Esperia, Italy after spending nearly 3 weeks in Egypt. Note her entries from these days give no description at all of Esperia! But she does write of her success at cards. While traveling, Geneva frequently made time for playing bridge (often during evening cocktails). Card games, and bridge in particular, were extremely popular in the 1920s. Geneva often ends her daily diary entries with notes on that day's bridge game, especially if she won.

Wednesday, March 29, 1922.  Esperia.

Left early for boat.  Will be so glad to be clean again.  Lovely little boat just as dainty as a pretty woman's house should be.  We have nice rooms and wonderful food.  Played bridge last night and won.

Thursday, March 30, 1922.  Esperia.

Another beautiful day.  The water is so blue and how we do stuff ourselves.  We all went for cocktails together.  Mr. Kress is still ill.  This afternoon we are going to play bridge again.  Pete tried to get some things out of his trunk but couldn't make up his mind to have his trunk hauled up out of hold again by rope.  We played cards this afternoon and I won again.  Inesada [?] came up dressed in Turkish costume Ali Bey gave him- made a very handsome Turk- brought out his dark skin.  Had tea with girls and Mr. Kress.  Played cards again in the evening won again.

  1. It is always amazing to see notes taken from a long time ago. I just wonder why they spent so much time playing cards instead of enjoying the view in their travels.
